Maj. Genl. A. Howard

General
When on your march to "Lookout Mountain" you remained a few days at Bridgeport. Ala. you may perhaps call to mind an interview with a man from "Sand Mountain" who, before the War had been a Professor of Languages at "Mary Sharp College" Winchester Tenn. Driven from Winchester in consequence of his avowed Unionism he had been saved from a Southern Prison though the intervention of the Rebel Genl. John B. Gordon between whom and his family a warm friendship had existed prior to the "War" which was not broken by disagreement on the subject of Secession.

For the two years last past he & his two sons have served as clerks in the Quarter Master's Department at this place.
