A few days ago, the Sheriff having a writ of Detinue to execute in that region appointed a Deputy to serve it, who did so, and took the property. into possession, and brought it to his home to await further proceedings. Forthwith the Defendant in the action of Detinue, and his associates to the number of from ten to fifteen, well armed, started in pursuit of the Deputy Sheriff and way laid his house during the night, for the purpose of capturing the said officer, and retaking the property. At daylight they approached to execute their designs. The officer, having two friends to aid him, resisted: a fight ensued, in which three of the assailants were wounded, two of them perhaps mortally. They then dispersed, - but we now understand that they are mustering forces in St. Clair, and thus strengthening their band to waylay and kill the said officer and all who aided him; and threats have also been made by them, we are informed, to burn down the Courthouse, and Jail of this County, and other buildings in this town. These rumors may not be correct; but there is no doubt but the lives of the said officer and his assistants are in constant jeopardy. In consequence of which they cannot remain at home, or feel security anywhere in the county. 
These lawless and misguided men, who call themselves "Union Men" firmly, and many of them perhaps honestly, believe, that civil law does not exist in Alabama: that the United States authorities will not aid the State of Alabama to enforce the execution of her laws; but on the
