I was discharged as an enlisted man by an order from Genl - O. O. Howard, to accept a commission as 2nd Lieut, about the 12th of October 1864. When I was first paid the pay master took the affore said order as a voucher. Congress has recently passed an act which entitles each soldier that enlisted in 1861 or 1862 who did not enlist as a veteran to $ 8 33/100 per month as bounty money by that act. I am entitled to one houndread & sixty odd dollars having served 2 years & 8 months as an enlisted man, but it will be necessary for me to have my discharge papers, or a copy of Genl Howard's order, you will please find me a discharge or procure a copy of
