Greenville, Ala. Sept 12th 1866

I have the honor to inform you that this day has been one of considerable excitement in this Place: this morning two Freedmen came to my Office, brought with them a broken gun, and reported to me that they were working out thier tax on the road near this town, One of the Freedmen had with him a gun for the purpose of the shooting some squirrels after his days work was completed; two men by the name of Harris from near Monteray of this County came along, seeing the Freedman with the gun, one Peterson Harris took upon himself the liberty of taking the gun from the Freedman, and breaking it in pieces, after  which he Peterson Harris snapped his Pistol twice at the  Freedman, after which the Freedman immediately reported the case to me, I was very busy loading cars with C.S. stores, but wrote a note to the Prosocuting Attorney requesting him to have the case investigated; but the Prosocuting Attorney refused to have anything to do with it. As the  Freedmen were returning to my Office the second time, they met with the man Peterson Harris in the street of this town when he Peterson Harris threatened that if he the Freedman made any attempt to prosocute him for breaking the gun he Peterson Harris would kill said  Freedman. I then sent my Clerk to the Probate Judge who was absent, then to the Prosocuting Attorney (Mr. Parmer) who informed my Clerk that Harris was a respectable man
