I have the honor to inform you I have at this place under arrest a man named Gilligan said to be a deserter from Co "D" 15th U S Infty will you please send transportation for him and I will send him to Montgomery with the two Soldiers left here as witnesses in the Hicks case and who are now waiting transportation to return to there Co

The outside of the letter (previous document) was transcribed so the sender's name is "McGogy, James Jr". The "Jr" part is certainly wrong. The second initial is undeniably an "F" on both documents. Although his name is listed on the envelope as James, the first initial he signs here looks more like an "I" to me. The signed first initial unfortunately does not match what I believe to be a "J" after "Lieut" in the address or the "I"s throughout the document, but I believe it is a "J" since his name is listed as James previously.
