The agent of the Bureau at this point is practically a non resident, having moved to Mississippi recently & seldom visits this place.

I learnt that the Asst. Com'rs are authorized to employ Special Agents to bring the new law into notice & secure its advantages as contemplated by Congress. If you think it worthwhile Sir, to make me Sp. Agent for North Ala, I will undertake to do this work & to render the law operative by showing the freedmen & others where the lands lie & how to get them.

I am well known in North Ala. & any person to whom you are likely to apply can inform you about me. I am known by Col Hunter Brooke of the Dept. staff & can refer without hesitation to Gens Whipple & Johnson & Cols Hough & Von Schrader & others of the Division staff.

Should my proposition meet your favorable consideration I shall be ready immediately to engage in the duties of the office.
