The leader of the party then ordered my men to stack their arms & go ashore one at a time, and soon afterwards sent them off under guard. The leader then ordered the officers of the boat to take their posts and from that time the leader of the party conducted affairs on the boat They landed the passengers some time the next day. They came down the Tombigbee river till they came to the "cut off" when they went across to the Alabama River. They took on wood at the mouth of the "cut off" then then proceeded down the river to Montgomery Hill landing. They landed there and the leader took a mule & went inland and was gone about three quarters of an hour. He came back and ordered the boat shoved off. Just as the boat left the shore a young man came running to the bank and called out "the Yanks are coming". The steamer ran down the River to a little stream about 4 miles below
