I did not sooner accept a position in the V.R.C. until my Regiment was mustered out. I can flatter myself that I have always enjoyed the confidence of my superior officers and comrades in arms. I have only to refer to my Military record at the Adjt. Gen. Office Washington without aluding to many testimonials and letters of recomendations from high distinguished officers.
Now to be slandered and misrepresented by a gang of rowdies, Rebels and outlaws to the very heart- (not this scamp "Mostyn" excepted, although he had been by chance in the federal army) is more than I can endure.
They may be able to raise portions condemning me, but I do not believe, that they will get the name of a single man, who comands the character of a gentleman. And why is all this, just now? Why have they not complained before this? because since I have been appointed A.C.S. I will not comply with their rascaly propositions. You will undoubtedly say: 'Why did you recomend Mostyn, when you knew he was a man of bad character?'
