In connection with the conversation I had the pleasure of having with you in this City last week as to the Condition of the Freedmen & the necessity for rations in N. Alabama I beg to call your special & prompt attention to some extracts from a letter rec'd on Saturday last from Mr Jas Nichols of Stevenson Ala. who has charge of our Freedmen's schools at that place. Mr Nichols is a native of Peterborough Hillsboro Co N. H. a soldier of the 5th N. H. V. who lost his right arm in 62 & for for some time has been engaged in teaching the Freedmen. He is a congregationalist & seems to have the confidence
