Maj. Gen. Swayne.

Dear Sir,
I came to this city from Gayneville with a request from P.H. Cook Esq, to see you personally with regard to the matter of his compensation for services rendered since the war as Bureau agent of Lowndes County. He addressed you a letter some time since, Simultaneously I addressed one to Jno Patton asking him to endorse the representation that were made to you in this behalf. I received a reply to that communication stating that "Cook's application for office under the new regime would receive attentions". It is unnecessary for me to recapitulate what was stated in the documents above mentioned, except that Mr Cook's labors have been arduous and immensely beneficial to the community, - both Black & White - While he has punished or
