We the undersigned beg your kind attention to a few facts as follows and hope the influence that you may exert in a private way may obviate the necessity of public display of a wrong as we consider it, by a prominent member of our Church, the Methodist Episcopal Church, by name Mr "Lakin" whom we understand is as assigned to his ministerial duties at Montgomery Ala for the next quarter. Sometime since Mr. Larkin appeared in our midst proposing to be a friend to the Freedmen. And as such we confided in him & left in his house money donated by the M E Church to the amount of six hundred dollars for the purpose of building a church &c. Mr. L went to work or claimed to have done so to burn a brick kill for our benefit and bought lumber &c at decatur and when he is about to leave us and the house not built - Except what your kindness though General Callas [[Callais]] has done to it we think it time for us to act in the matter but prefer to act in a private way so that the enemys of the north may not use it against us. We address you this letter to state that this Mr Lakin has to
