We have the honor to acknowledge the rct of yours of this date asking us for information in regard to what we have been enabled to accomplish for the Bureau in the matter of securing to it
lands which, by the act of Congress of 16 July 1866,
is secured to it. We regret that we are not able to make a more favorable report, but
can assure you that we have done what we could in the matter entrusted to us by you as atts. at Law. We [[?]] to report seriatim on the cases now in the District Court for this Middle District of Ala.
   
1. In the matter of a libel at the instance of the United States upon the information of the District Attorney against "Old Jim, scrap Iron & Brass," three hundred and fifty tons of which you sold to Mr. A.H Shepherd, we have put in the claim of Mr. Shepherd, who swears that his iron was really never libelled, but the Marshall advertised it for sale upon an order granted in vacation in New York as he asserts by the District Judge.
