Montgomery Ala General: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your telegram of this date, in which I am granted a leave of absence "If Maj. Occleston will assume my duties" I exhibited the telegram to him and he declined, much to my satisfaction, as I knew him to be no friend to the Bureau. I did not ask for a leave until I was satisfied that I could leave my duties in safe hands. Viz. the officers and Employees in my Office I will await your further orders in the premises.
