Buykeville, Elmore Co Ala June 1" 1867 Maj. Genl Wager Swayne Comdg Dist of Alabama General Henry Markerson a freedman, father of a family, having been assaulted with a stick and had a gun levelled at him by his employer Joseph Watt and his son Tom Watt, left their plantation and stayed a few days at my place, where from motives of humanity I gave him some food. He afterwards hired one of his children to a son of mine, and hired himself to other parties. He and his family were almost naked and entirely destitute. Suit is now brought against me for what I did for his relief (under a law passed by the legislature of Alabama to prevent inter[[ference]]
