ken some of my mules he would permit me to retain two of those which might be collected in this county.  On my return here I told Capt Carpenter, among other things, that it was reported that Matthew Marshall had a good many government mules, either at his own place or the Bryan Croom place.  

A very few days after I told him this, he told me that he had gotten a mule from the Bryan Croom place, and in pursuance of Genl McMillan's instructions [[strikethrough]] he [[/strikethrough]] offered the mule to me. It was so old, poor and worthless that I declined to receive it - this occurred about the 1st of September 1865. I further know the fact that the mule about which Arthur Croom is indicted was delivered to the officers of the federal army who were sent here to collect government property.
