Selma, Jan 14th 1867 Maj. Gen. Wager Swayne Dear Sir: [[stamp]] At the request of Lieut. Shorkley, I write you personally in regard to the lots now occupied by freedmen on the land known as the Weaver lot. The property is advertised for sale by auction on the 18th of February next; by the U.S. Marshal. I suppose it is fully known to you that this property was set aside for the use and benefit of freedmen upon conditions approved by yourself or your authorized representatives. The original authority for the use of the tract in the manner referred to, was given by Special Order No. 84 Bu R. F & AL 1865. Transmitted to me by yourself. As no letter book was kept in my office at the time, I cannot refer specifically to the correspondence from which this grant resulted.
