Mobile, March 26th/67.
Col. J.L. White
Selma, Ala
Dear Sir:
I wrote you last night about the damaged corn, but have received yours of the 23rd this morning, speaking of two lots of corn as damaged, one Messrs. J.H. Franklin, + Co. 200 sacks, & 621 sacks per Lawrence for government.
You say both damaged in about equal proportions. In the same category 2/3 or 7/8 of the corn received the last week, and now being received, could be placed, because nearly all the corn shipped recently necessarily damaged from the terrible spell through which it had to pass, from the west to its destination.
The carriers are in no way responsible for the condition of the corn.
I herewith hand you a note addressed to Messrs, Davis, Hall + Co, the largest dealers here, and their answer, concurred in by M. Thomas Strang, an old and experienced corn merchant.
See what they say, & show these to the persons claiming damages.
Yours truly,
