L.B. 65 & 66 vl. S.D. of G. 1867 Office of Sub Ass't Com'r Bureau of RF and AL Greenville Ala May 15th 1867 Gardner Sam'l. S. Sub Ass't Commissioner Reports an attack by five or six persons, about 14 miles from here. Sunday evening last, on a number of Blacks, one of whom was killed and two wounded. States Informant is an intelligent white man from the Neighborhood, who thinks the attack was in execution of threats made, because of the establishment of Educational Sunday Schools there. Also states, having heard rumors of the killing of one or two Blacks in the direction of Monterey. since the meeting last Saturday, but that a definite report cannot be made from the meagre information received.
