I have the honor respectfully to report a case of murder which occurred last Sunday evening about fourteen miles from this place. A number of black persons were passing peaceably along the road when they were fired upon by some five or six persons. One fell dead, while the others started to run. Immediately another volley was fired, and two fell, one shot through the shoulder, and another through the foot. A very intelligent white man from the neighborhood, who reported the facts to me, thinks it is the execution of threats made in regard to the establishment of Educational Sunday Schools in the vicinity. He says the well disposed citizens there, will not dare to investigate the matter, Having heard of the matter yesterday. I was making my arrangements to go to the locality, but this gentleman says it would be a rash act for anyone to
