I have read the accompanying letter addressed to Dr. F.W. Sykes over the signature of T.M. Goodfellow and have the honor to report that after Maj. Goodfellow requested me to take charge of the crop Col Ashford came and asked permission as administrator of the estate of J. Harris to ship a lot of cotton then ready for market. he assuring me that the hands would be paid and knowing that there was still cotton enough left on the plantation to meet the demands of the laborers. I informed him that I could not object to his shipping that lot but would hold enough to pay the hands in the meantime it was decided by an arbitration that the crop should be equally divided between Goodfellow and the Harris estate.
Maj. Goodfellow informed me that he had a lot of corn & fodder which he said he wanted applied towards paying in part certain notes he had given Freedmen for borrowed money and afterwards commenced hauling it away I ordered him not to do so and told him I had done so for the reason that he had promised me that he could apply its value at whatever the lot might be appraised towards paying the notes mentioned. Owing to some personal difficulty with Ashford. Maj. Goodfellow did not give the business his personal attention but done everything
