Dear Sir
I had expected to have written to you before this time, (as I promised last spring when I saw you in Montgomery), about schools for freedmen in this part of Ala. But owing to the unsettled state of the country, the unhealthiness of the past year, and the state of my own health, I have not been able to do any thing of sufficient consequence to deserve your notice. I have however conferred from time to time with Major Pierce the discreet and respected agent of the Bureau at Demopolis, and have given him all the assistance in my power, which has not been much. He has succeded in establishing in Demopolis a large and flourishing school, which under the efficient management of Mr Drake the superintendent has I think accomplished all that could have
