Sir:-

In accordance with instructions received from your office dated July 16th, I have the honor to transmit herewith the names and P.O. Address of the several Justices of the Peace serving in this Sub-District;  with the exception of Clark Co. from which no report has as yet been received.  The mail facilities in the Sub-District are very limited.  Indeed, in some of the Counties there are no Post Offices at all;  which cause great delay in receiving answers to communications addressed to the Judges of Probate.

Jurisdiction of Justices of the Peace.

Justices try all civil issues under $100.00, and all criminal offences where the damage done is under $10.00.  They are conservators of the Peace, can solemnize marriages, take acknowledgements to conveyances, assess fines against defaulting hands on public roads, issue attachments, warrants for felony, bind offenders to seek the Peace, and remand runaway apprentices.  They commit to jail for all offences, though they try only cases where the damages are under $10.00.  They act in cases of Bastardy, and are authorized to administer oaths and affidavits equally with any other magistrate of the State.  They punish for contempt of
