hired out to being put in jail That Mr Brooks has always borne a good reputation in the neighborhood that he has known him for 15 years and since negroes hae been free he has treated them well and honorably both as a Justice of the Peace and as a man.

Jeff Wright being recalled and sworn stated that he thinks Mr Brooks give Leonard his choice whether to be hired out or go to jail & that the Judgment was for $50, or to hired for 30 days,

Thos W White being sworn stated that he lives in about 4 miles of J R Brooks. that he is a minister of the Gospel of the M.E. Church has known Mr Brooks about 12 years & his general character has been good has never heard of Mr Brooks' being cruel or doing injustice to negroes since they have been free as a Justice of the Peace or as a man
