I acted according to my judgement, and like many others, erred; but I claim that it was no fault of mine but a misfortune to be shared by the Freedmen. I had much more interest in the crop than they, which is the best argument I can offer that I did what I esteemed my duty in disposing of the cotton. It was impossible for the Freedmen not to have known my intentions of shipping the cotton to New Orleans.
