City of Demopolis

Before me David M. Taliaferro, Mayor of the City of Demopolis and Ex Officio a Justice of the Peace in and for said County personally came and appeared Hilliard Haywood Freedman known to me, who being sworn to tell the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth testifies & says.  That at Demopolis Alabama on the 27th day of Jany 1868 at the hour of 11'38 PM, in relation to quarter Master and Commissary stores, which were stolen from the Govt Warehouse under the charge of P.E. O'Connor, on the night of the 19th of January 1868 - That on sunday night the 19th January 1868, he saw Col'd Men name Burton who belonged as a slave to Mr. Levin A. Sledge of said County, Jim Pickens and Edmond Sledge in the Govt Warehouse under charge of P.E. O'Connor and saw them bring there from a lot of bags filled with what he thought and appeared to be, shoes, clothes, sugar, coffee, cans of preserves and other articles which he did not see.  That he saw the shoes, overcoats, pants, drawers & jackets, also sugar coffee and cans containing preserved fruit and vegitables, That he saw said Jim Pickens open the locks of the aforesaid Warehouse with keys, and saw said Jim Pickens fixing keys for about three weeks previous to 19th January 1868, aforesaid on which he entered said warehouse.
