Office Bureau Refugees and Freedmen
Sub district of Mobile
Mobile, Alabama Jan. 29, 1868

Brevet Major George Shorkley
A.A.A. Genl.

Major,
The business of this office has greatly increased lately, owing to presentation of last year's unsettled claims, more frequent complaints of injustice, and - not the least urgent - the forwarding of soldiers claims for Bounty &c which are just commencing to require attention. The last branch of our duties has heretofore been in the hands of lawyers.
I have the honor to request authority to employ a temporary clerk on $50 a month - expecting that his services will not be required more than three months
Very respectfully
Yr obdt sevt
James Gillette
