War Department,
Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands,
Washington, Febry. 19th 1868.

Brvt. Brig. Genl. J. Hayden,
Asst. Commissioner,
Montgomery Ala.

General:
I have just received two letters, one from Genl Meade and the other from Governor Patton, by the hand of Dr Peter Brice of Tuscaloosa, Ala. Please put the Asylum in repair, that is the portion of it devoted to the use of the colored patients. This will include the construction of a fence around the portion where the patients are to go in and out. From any beds, bedding, or hospital furniture you may have on hand in Alabama which can be spared you may supply this Asylum, keeping a careful record of every article. If you cannot spare the furniture now, you will be able to do so by reducing your hospitals and substituting infirmaries, which I think is being done. Your Medical Director
