A G Gray USA
Surgeon in Chief State of Ala

Dear Sir
I understand by Major Gillette of Mobile that you are at the head of the medical department of this State. I was stating to the Major the great distitution of the poor Freedmen and others in this neighborhood, and that the calls on me for medical and other aid was more than I was able to supply.

He advised me to write to you on the subject, and as I have the pleasure of being acquainted with you I thought I would assertain if there is any way by which I can continue to give these poor people aid and the government remunerate me for it.

My office is like that of a Hospital and calls for my aid which has been and is still continued to be bestowed almost exclusively gratuitously is constant. I have worked for the public in this and other ways untill I am not able to do it longer.

Please answer this at your earliest convenience and oblige

Very Respectfully
Yours &c
