Sir,

I have the honor to report that on my first arrival at this Station Freedman Riley Williams made complaint to me of having received ill treatment from John Cunningham a white Citizen, the circumstances as reported were that this man Cunningham without any cause or provocation whatever, having met the said Freedman out hunting, attacked him knocked him down, Kicked out several teeth and caused other injuries upon different parts of the body. I gave the Freedman instructions to report the case to Captain J.F. McGogy Sub Commissioner at Talladega Ala when he stated he had done so, but that no Satisfaction could be gained from him. I informed the Freedman that I would inquire into the matter, but it being just before the Election, my time was so much occupied that I could not make an investigation, but immediately after the Election another complaint
