Personally appeared before R T Smith Sub Asst Comm'r. of the Sub District of Opelika Ala. Bureau of R F and A.L. Miles Smedley who after being duly sworn say on oath that during the fall of 1867. one [[Jere? Jeve?]] Noland Freedman was murdered near Fredonia in said County, and that said Noland's body lay out in the plantation of one Mr Adams  for a week after the murder was committed. Affiant further says that one John Lawrence of said county was charged with the killing of said Noland.
