INDIAN MATERIAL - Grace Nicholson's
COLLECTION

The Basket of the Indian entered into their life from the cradle to the grave. When born they were placed in a baby basket, during their lifetime they ate out of baskets. Food was cooked in baskets and stored too. At time of wedding-baskets were given as gifts. In ceremonies the baskets were of special design and shape and weave. Then finally, in some tribes, the Indians were buried in baskets. Baskets were given to the bereaved instead of flowers.

The Indian tribes are classified according to their linguistic differences.

The Tulare Indians are extinct. There are a few living on a reservation but there are no full bloods among them. Originally they lived at Tulare Lake. This Lake disappeared and the Indians also vanished.
