show any skill at it, because of the immense shortage of people w ith any training in those fields. Perhaps I may be able to get a semi-scientific job near where Jack works (on journal of a scientific company, for example, or in a science library of his company) which will get us friends in common, etc. That is practical, but it all hinges on how well I can do in these courses, of course. So far I am doing near-A work, and I hope to keep it up. The standards in the math courses are incredibly low to keep from flunking too many students out of engineering, etc. Engineers have only one more math course, namely calculus; me too, and if they let them thru they may give me decent grades.

As for the Russian, it can be immensely practical for the purpose I thought I mentioned before: translating scientific articles,,for which there is also quite a demand. The girl across the street, in her third year of Russian, is getting paid 8-10₵ a word for this work. Probably there would only need to be one dictionary to translate scientific work in one field. If we are here three more years, which we anticipate, if not for more, there would be an excellent opportunity to take all the Russian given here, namely three years of it; then I should be as ready as she, if the science also goes well.

On your trip to Atlanta you will be going very near Ina and Koen Swart, who, I believe, live at a suburb of Atlanta (he teaching at a high-class girl's college, I forget the name).

We are going up to Chicago this week end. Jack's mother is giving a joint birthday party for me and for her other daughter-in-law, Shirley, whose birthday is also this week. That will be fun. We will leave Saturday so to give me time to do my math homework before starting, and come back Sunday night. It isn't so easy driving then, and much easier Monday morning (5-8 a.m.) but the early rise destroys us for work that day so we won't try it again. Perhaps we will go to an outdoor free concert Saturday night. There are many in Chicgo parks.

Well, back to work.

Love,
Doris
