when we first opened the windows wide yesterday one window had no screen (we put it in later) and many [[strikethrough]] flies [[/strikethrough]] end-of-summer flies came in. Jack has been very busy with the fly-swatter, which he enjoys using.

The Asian flu has reached campus and many have been stuck. I cross my fingers every day. Our Russian part-time teacher & two members of the class have it, out of a survey of 8. I should explain that Russian is being taught by the head of the Russian dept. and one of her graduate students, since no other real teacher is available. Her student is an American, but he seems to have a real grasp of the language. We are now reading a slightly modified series of stories by Turgenev, Memoire of a Sportsman. I looked at one of the stories in translation in Chicago (Jack's grandfather's), and it was almost word for word as in our book. My goal is to read Russian as fluently as French, and if I take it for one or two more years I may be able to.

Well, must get back to work. Math is quite a lot harder this year (a grad-undergrad course) and requires much time. Physics is easier. My housework, as usual, slips.

Love,
Doris
