We are now studying modern physics and I am learning about what subject matter Jack is currently studying -- nuclear physics, quantum mechanics. It's more exciting than before, and more difficult, and very sketchily presented.

Jack is feeling flattered. He is having to decide on what research group he wants to become involved with in order to start his thesis. He chose two, that run by Mapother and by Frauenfelder, two professors. Frauenfelder's is very popular and hard to get into. He was accepted by Mapother. Just for kicks he asked Frauenfelder, at 1:00 one night after a grading session. He was accepted there too! He was so pleased. Now he can't quite decide again. Frauenfelder's group has the one disadvantage that F is an extremely hard-driving individual and Jack isn't. He told F. this, in fact. We'll see. With F. you finish sooner, of course. I think he'll choose him.

[[strikethrough]] This week [[/strikethrough]] Monday night I went to a Radcliffe party. Think I'll continue to attend their functions, since among the graduates are: Mrs. Almy (Mr. Almy is head of Physics Dept), Mrs. Bardeen (he got Nobel prize in physics), Mrs. Seitz (greatest man in solid state physics), to name a few. Good business?

Love, Doris
