Dear Sir:
Your note of the 20th May and accompanying set of Educational Books for Freedmen were duly received and would have had prompt attention but for protracted absence from town on official duty.
Your second note of a later date, is at hand with a generous package of books by express.
I thank  you for the books and will see that they are used in accordance with your wishes.
In regard to your Freedmen's Series of School Books; I am glad to say, after a careful examination, that I consider them excellent books. They are written with professional skill, so that they are adapted at least as well as any other series, to the simple literary [[?]] of the colored people.
