Mr. John Kimball Sup Schools &c

My Dear Sir:
In reply to your communication of the 18th inst. I have the honor to inform you that but one school in that part of W.Va. west of the mountains reports to this office; that is at Parkersburg. Rev. S.C. Colburn is the teacher with about 50 scholars. The school is held in a Govt. Building and the teacher paid by the public school School Board.

All the schools in "the Valley", from Harpers Ferry up (with the exception of that at Winchester) are supported by the "Free Baptist Home Mission Society" which association works through the machinery of the American Missionary Ass'n, and the teachers have their commissions from the latter. Rev. N.C. Brockett is the field agt and sup of these schools in the Valley, with head-quarters, at present, I believe, at Staunton. Four of these schools viz. Martinsburg, 1 teacher 128 scholars, Harpers Ferry 1 teacher 57 scholars, Shepherstown 1 teacher 70 scholars, and Charlestown 2 (ove teachers 90 scholars are in the state of West Va. and I suppose should report to yourself. By communicating with Mr. Brockett you will be able to arrange the matter. I have not visited these schools but believe them to be in good condition.

If, as I understand, Alexandria with Louden & Fairfax Co.s are transferred to this jurisdiction please send me the information I need.

Very Truly Yours &c
R.M. Manly
