that sum, if indeed so far. We should be glad to rent a room for the school, and will do so at once, if a suitable one can be found.

3d No appropriation can be made for either purpose until it appears certain that a school will be maintained. If this is left contingent upon the ability of the freemen to pay tuition, will it not be a very uncertain reliance?

Your interest in this matter is fully appreciated, and it most painful to be under the necessity in this and hundreds of similar cases to say anything discouraging. But really it is little, compared with what needs to be done, that the Government and charity can do.
