My Dear Sir: Your letter of the 26th Ult. addressed to Gen Brown has been referred to me, as Sup. of Education, for a reply. Your interest in the work of Christianizing and educating the Freedmen, as well as your personal sacrifices to that end, are appreciated and gratefully acknowledged.
The expenditure of money by the Bureau for schools is restricted by law tot he repairs and rental of buildings for schools. There is nothing therefore that we can do for Sabbath Schools or churches.
If you should establish a day school and will report to me the number of pupils in attendance, undoubtedly an allowance for rent could be made.
