Mrs. E. K. Cheney
Yours of the 8th inquiring whether there are places where the freed people would pay the expense of a teachers board is rec'd. A number of such places have been reported; Their present condition can only be associated by corresponce;- some of them I know have started pay schools under illiterate colored teachers. Many places are ready to make such promises which, will not fulfill for any length of time; and generally they will require colored teachers. Please write me what kind of teachers, and how many, you can send on such conditions, and mean time I will ascertain the best locations of this kind, and report to you. I think there is a good one for a white teacher at Ashland near Richmond.

Resp'y Yours
