My Dear Sir:

The invoice of First Readers, 2000 in number, which you forwarded to Gen. Brown, Asst Com'r. have been received and rapidly going into use among the Freedman in different parts of the State. The General directs me to make to you his most grateful acknowledgments for so timely and so valuable a gift. There is no other form in which the same amount of money can be bestowed upon the Freedmen and contribute as much to their present happiness and their future good. The book is admirable in itself, perfectly adapted to help thousands in taking their steps in learning, and paving the way for the other books of your series, which I hope will have an extensive sale and influence in this section of Country.
