Genl Thomas S.A.C.
Dear Sir:
Yours of the 27th is at hand. It is the purpose of Gen. Howard to do something more to assist the societies than has been done. There is to be a conference between Gen H. and the Officers of the Charitable associations next week in Washington to mature a plan. I can much better answer to your questions after that meeting and the consequent instructions from Washington.

But I may venture to say now that I am very sure that a moderate support will be extended, from one source or another, wherever teacher and school can be brought together. The matter will be much simplified and facilitated where teachers can be obtained upon the ground.
I would be more specific if I could, but must wait for those above. I had understood from Mr. Jones, Agt. of this society of Friends that he should send a teacher to Wytheville. He will be here in two days when I shall know. If he does not provide, I will see that the $15. you ask for for Mr. Safewright is made up.
Very Respy
