Rev. E.P. Smith
Genl. Field Agt. A.M.A.

Dear Sir:

I thank you for the Commissions just rec'd for the Petersburg Schools. Genl. Brown requests me to suggest that we had better not call on those teachers to make reports on you Blanks. They do not know of the harm[[?]] you have done them, and would not appreciate it (some of them). We know that they are trying to do their duty by the Freedmen, at the same time prejudices are very stubborn things. I will send you a monthly consolidated statement of their work, which you can add to your published lists, as compensation for your commissions.

The efforts of the Board of Education are eminently praiseworthy and in this way we can obtain some aid without compromising them among their people, or you before the public.

Very Respy
