Mr. J. W. Geoghegan

Sir: Yours of the 11th is at hand. I do not yet understand the muddle at Clarksville, but I will understand it in due time. I do not prejudge you But this I will say, that when I have entered into contract with certain parties to pay them stipulated sums for their services, other persons, strangers to me, cannot without my previous consent become parties to that contract. If you and the freedmen of Clarksville claim the right to contract the school there, and will support a school, I certainly shall be glad and it will be in the highest degree creditable to the people. But even then, they should not displace teachers from a building rented by me as the agent of the government, and with whom I have a contract, without my concurrence. I hope the matter is capable of a satisfactory explanation.

Very Respy
