Miss Fannie Pegram

Your letter, without date, is rec'd I am certainly heartily sorry for your trouble, but it is impossible for me to do anything for your personal protection. If you think you are in danger had you not better get away. You know I have no troops, and no control of civil authorities. If your conduct has been blameless, you certainly have no grounds for retracting; if on the other hand you have been in any respect, in error, you will gain rather than lose in self respect and people's estimation, by an acknowledgement of the error. I trust, however, that your trouble has passed by before this time.

Yours &c
