Office Supt Education

Dear Mr. Hathaway,

Yours of the 6th is rec'd. I am Supt. of Schools for Virginia only. I assure you that the demand for primary books (primers, 1st Readers and Spelling Books) is very great, and in my extensive experience and field observation I know of no way in which a little money will do so much good. I should buy books, if I had the means, of the Publishers in New York and Boston, at the bare cost of manufacturing them. Please think of this matter farther.

Yours Truly

Office Supt Ed
July 9

Mrs. E.I. Cheney

Dear Madam

Yours of the 7th is at hand. I have not rec'd any letter from you inquiring in regard to the School Bill. The first meeting of the Board of Education will be had tomorrow: an appropriation will probably be made, next Monday, by the City Council; and I will hurry up the definite arrangements as fast as possible, and inform you at the earliest moment.

Will Miss Ball consent, and will you send her to the Normal School next year? I did not speak to her before she left, because I had not ascertained Miss Clarks decision, and because I had not had opportunity to consult the Board of Directors. We must also have a third teacher who ought to be a [[?singer]] and late from a normal school, with modern gymnastics &c. Will you support such a teacher? I am looking for one, and shall go north within two weeks.
