190 428. 184/264 July 21 9 C.S. Schaeffer Dear Sir: You will receive by this mail your appointment as Asst Sup. Schools. As you left the matter of terms wholly with me, I asked that your salary should be "at the rate of $100 per month for the time used in executing specific orders from me". As traveling expenses have to be collected when traveling under orders, it will be necessary for me to issue formal orders. Your field has not definite boundaries, but is called South Western Va. You are so much better acquainted with that territory and its wants, than I am (I have never been there) that I must solicit from you suggestions, from time to time of such tours to make or points to visit, as you judge most desirable and useful. The work in hand is the development and care of schools already existing, and the establishment of others. Day schools are the chief care of the Bureau, though Sunday schools are a part of its work. I shall be glad to hear from you in regard to proposed work. Yours Truly, R.M. Manly Supt Education
