Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen & Abandoned Lands,
Office of Asst. Superintendent of Schools Virginia
Christiansburg, Montgomery County, Va.,
Sept. 20th 1869.

Rev. R.M. Manly
Supt. of Education, Va.

Sir:

In pursuance to your letter of instructions, dated August 12th, I would respectfully present the following report of tour of inspection, throughout the several counties therein referred to.
At Goodson, Washington County, I found a school taught by a young white man, Thos. A. Cushman from Massachusetts, who had under his charge 60 scholars, with the prospect of increasing the number to 100 day and night pupils. At the present, the school is wholly supported by the Freedmen, and need the co-operation of friends in the work before them. Their House 22 x 40 feet; secured by the assistance of the Bureau (but not wisely constructed) is sadly in need of repairs. The roof is like a sieve, in rainy weather, and the building has never been sealed or plastered, making it entirely unfit for winter use. The following estimate has been presented for putting it in order. Viz:
3100 feet Lumber at $22 50 per thou. $69.75
110 lbs Nails and other Hardware. 11.00
20 Squares ceiling at $3 50 per Sq. 70.00
Roofing 25.00
Total $175.75
