The people promise to do all they can in the matter, but confess their inability to do much in the way of furnishing the funds. Their Teacher proposes a festival or some other plan by which to assist in making the building comfortable. I was very much pleased with the School-found it under good discipline Teacher very popular among all classes of the colored people and apparently doing a good work. The House is furnished with benches and a few articles of School Room furniture, but only one Desk. Their Sabbath School numbers 70 Scholars. I have recently furnished them with a full supply of Books for present use.

The School at this place was formerly taught by F.E. Bowen "Col'd" whose reports I presume you have on file.

Richard C. Wadkins "Col'd" is clerk of the School Board.

At Abingdon, Washington County, I found a school of 18 Infant Scholars, taught by Flora Wallace "Col'd" (cripple) in her Father's House. Also a Sunday School in their large School House, built for them by the assistance of the Bureau; and in good condition and with every necessary convenience and comfort, excepting their lack of Desks. Sabbath School numbers 60 Scholars, with prospect of a large increase during the winter months. I have furnished the with the necessary Books; Superintendent, T.S. Harris one of the leading Colored men of the place. Former Teacher of Day School, Mr Parks and his family subsequently Alice C Hall "Cold" commissioned, I am informed by the New York Branch of the Freedmens Union Com. They are very anxious for two good Teachers to be sent them; prefer their own race on account of the difficulty in obtaining board for white Teachers.
