the head of the examining committee!
Nick is really doing it the hard way, to have a young baby, 8 hour day, new house, and study! We think he should have quit work & done it in a year or so - much less mental strain. But people hate to give up an income.
After the prelim Jack will have to rush into print the results of the experiment which has been going on [[strikethrough]] since [[/strikethrough]] for almost 9 months. He will have enough results by about then. Results come very slowly because of various statistical fluctuations whose importance [[strikethrough]] usua [[/strikethrough]] can only be reduced by very long data collection. He has been anxiously scanning the new literature (chiefly the Physical Review for this country, Nature for Great Britan, etc.; I scan the Russian literature) for signs of someone else producing results first. It is a rather competitive business. So far so good. He will write a "Letter to the Editor" with his data & explanations, not too long.
