Contract For Labor,

This indenture made and entered into this 31st day of January 1866 between H. S. Spicer of the County of Edgecombe & State of North Carolina of the first part and the undersigned freedwoman, Caroline Baker of said Country & State of the Second Part. Witnesseth, that the said Caroline for her son named Turner, a youth about fifteen years of age, has agreed with the said Spicer of the first part that said youth Turner shall work for said Spicer from this 31 day of January 1866 until December 31, 1866, to do all kinds of labor  common to the farms of the County, to work ten hours per day, shall do his faithfully and be respectful in his deportment, and she agrees that one half of his monthly pay shall be retained by said Spicer till the end of the year, and that the amount so retained shall be forfeited by a notation of the Contract — and she further agrees that time lost by idleness or absence without leave shall not be paid for.
And the said H. S. Spicer has agreed that he will furnish said laborer with comfortable quarters, sufficient rations, and the amount of Money per Month which stands opposite her name, Treat him kindly and encourage the establishment of School for this child.
